Adolescent and Teen Mental Health, Lessons from Covid-19 Pandemic

by Charles Barnard

In this short clip from a conversation about the impact of Covid-19 on the mental health of children and adolescents there are a couple of important points being made. The key words being brought up in this clip are fear, anxiety, isolation and then the protective issues such as social connectedness and pro-social behaviors or altruism. These are very important ideas that go to the heart of what we do at Success Institutes and our Growth Mindset Training Academy and Athlete Training Academy.

Our mindset training addresses every issue mentioned in those three minutes. It is vital to recognize that they indicate Covid made the situation worse. It was already a problem. It is high time we give it more attention.

Training mindsets is easy and difficult. The actual process of doing little things every day is not difficult. The little things include things like thinking about some important questions, reading a short article or watching a video, exercising, breathing, praying or practicing mindfulness and meditation. It can include doing a specific activity that may or may not be difficult depending on your particular comfort level.

The hard part of the training is doing it consistently, especially the initial breakthrough training that is attempting among other things to build the vital morning and evening rituals into the daily routine. That is the most challenging part for most people. The key to that working is accountability from someone close to you or a accountability partner or coach. We also offer a financial incentive. The bottom line is the individual has to be committed to change.

When talking about training teens, accountability becomes crucial. The teens that need it most don’t have those qualities we are trying to develop and are more likely to want to quit and not see it through. Lovingly providing the discipline, structure, and emotional support is the role of the parent or guardian.

It is crucial.

I strongly encourage parents to watch our free webinar to learn more. Ultimately, training the mindset of a champion arch is the goal. We offer significant discounts for those who commit to the entire curriculum and even have a generous benefactor who will consider providing scholarships for the truly needy.

The training curriculum begins with the crucial personal breakthrough training. That is followed by building mindsets of love, faith, faithfulness, family, friends, learning, well-being, and human spirit. It is long. It cannot not lead to changes in mindset when completed. Please, consider doing it with your teen or even for yourself. The issues with fear and anxiety are not just teen issues nor is part of the remedy – love and social connectedness.

Thoroughly check out Growth Mindset Training Academy and we urge you schedule a time where we can talk and discuss it in detail. While everyone can benefit, not everyone is suited for it, and we are very particular about who we will enroll. A conversation with us is just that, a conversation where we can learn about each other, the desired outcomes, and whether this will be a fit for you or not.

What We Do: My team and I train athletes to become champions on and off the athletic field or arena. Who this is for? This is for parents and their student athlete who yearn for athletic and academic excellence as they fight to compete athletically at the next level, yet secretly fear the mounting pressures will cause their family to join the tens of thousands of college athletes and their families who experience stress related mental health challenges. What makes me unique? Besides the unique training, I have thirty years’ experience designing and implementing training programs for teenagers and young adults. Most coaches do not know how to transfer their skills to others because they don’t understand the mind/body connection. Traditional athletic coaching will never be maximized without proper mindset training, which requires both specialized knowledge and experience designing and implementing training programs. Case Studies Billy is an undersized shortstop. The summer of his freshman year in high school he got one hit his final at bat. By Billy’s junior year, he replaced the graduated four year Division 1 bound starting shortstop and earned all-conference honors. After graduating, he attended the local university, one of the top ranked D3 baseball teams in the country. After Covid canceled his freshman season, he was a scholar athlete for two straight years as an unrecruited walk on. Jill was a high school senior who was one of the favorites to win the indoor state championship in the 60m dash. Entering her final regular season meet, Jill’s times hadn’t improved from her junior year. She feared not getting a D1 scholarship. Using only one powerful mindset technique, Jill set personal and meet records in four successive meets while winning the state championship. She got her D1 scholarship. Mark was a junior at a D3 school baseball program. He had D1 talent and was expected to dominate the competition. Instead, Mark said, "I was mediocre at best." After mindset training, Mark did not lose a game for the final two years of college, became an All-American and even got to play three years of professional baseball.
